Sam Benowitz

Fruit tree expert and owner, Raintree Nursery

Sam Benowitz has been the owner of Raintree Nursery for 44 years. Raintree Nursery has searched the world to collect the best backyard fruit varieties for American gardens, selecting fruit varieties for flavor and ease of growing. Sam is founder and past president of the Western Washington Fruit Research Foundation. He is a member of the Garden Writers Association. He most recently co-authored, with Theresa Knutsen, an article on growing fruiting plants in containers, published in the February 2016 issue of Fine Gardening. He is a longtime guest of Ciscoe Morris and has appeared on regional and national gardening programs and blogs. He is a speaker on fruit growing and has given talks in California, Alaska, Kansas, Oklahoma and elsewhere to Master Gardeners and other garden groups.

Theresa Knutsen

Propagations and Greenhouse Manager, Raintree Nursery

Theresa Knutsen has been employed at Raintree Nursery, a Washington based nursery specializing in plants that produce edible fruit and berries, since 1995. For the last 10 years she has been the Greenhouse and Propagations Manager, overseeing greenhouse productions and the care of potted plants year round. She also helps with answering customer questions about plant selection, cultivation, and managing pests and diseases on their plants during our main sale season, and writes the monthly “Growing Tips” for the Raintree web site. Theresa co-authored an article on growing fruiting plants in containers published in the February 2016 issue of Fine Gardening. She has given demonstration presentations at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show in the past, and teaches several classes at Raintree Nursery each year, including For the Beginner, Propagation, and Growing Fruiting Plants in Containers. She has a B.S. in Horticulture from Washington State University, although most of her experience in growing fruiting plants has been acquired over the last 20 years at Raintree Nursery and at home.

Yes You CAN Grow Fruit-Bearing Plants in a Container!

Learn all about types of fruit-bearing plants that can be grown in containers for your own portable orchard, including the best varieties for NW growers. The specific needs of citrus, blueberries, and apples will be addressed. Sam and Theresa will also cover selecting the right containers, best potting mixes (or make your own), and how and when to water and fertilize. They will demonstrate helpful techniques for getting started with both potted and bare root plants, and re-potting older plants.
