Born in England, Karen grew up with a trowel in her hand. After moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1996 she joined Molbak’s Garden & Home as a garden plant specialist before establishing Le Jardinet in 2006. Whilst initially specializing in custom container gardens, Karen now applies that same attention to detail by designing functional and artistic landscapes. Her designs have been featured in many prestigious publications, including Fine Gardening, Sunset and Better Homes & Gardens. She is co-author of two books: Gardening with Foliage First: 127 Dazzling Combinations that Pair the Beauty of Leaves with Flowers, Bark, Berries, and More (Timber Press, 2017) and the award-winning Fine Foliage (St. Lynn’s Press, 2013). Karen also writes inspirational design articles on two blogs and is a regular contributor to several digital and print publications. As an instructor for the online community Craftsy.com, Karen teaches two garden design courses including “Gorgeous Garden Design; Foliage & Focal Points” that was mostly filmed in her own 5 acre garden in Duvall, WA. Whether on the stage, television or radio Karen’s aim is always to inspire, educate and share the fun of gardening with her audience.
Learn the importance of establishing focal points, a key component of good garden design, and analyze three areas where they play an important role. We will explore using a variety of features as focal points and discuss how to frame and enhance these with interesting foliage to create a memorable vignette. With ideas for budgets and gardens of all sizes, you will quickly gain the confidence and knowledge to transform your own landscape into a series of eye-catching scenes.
