Back to Nature for Kids

See, touch and learn in the PlayGarden

This February the PlayGarden at the Northwest Flower & Garden Show is going on an adventure – an island adventure!

“Swiss Family Robinson” will be coming to the PlayGarden, with activities for kids of all ages based on the beloved novel first published in 1812 and popularized by many different versions of films and television series.

Here’s what young Mom Holly Troyer said in a Facebook posting during last year’s show:

“The PlayGarden was AMAZING!!! We have been coming for 5 years and it was by far the BEST in regards to an area for the kids. My kids spent over 2 hours playing while my husband and I got to take turns viewing the different vendors. My 3 year old had a great time locating all of the bird houses throughout each of the gardens. We are ALL looking forward to next year!!!”

The most popular features are returning, such as dirt to dig in, chickens and bunnies to pet, planting seeds to take home and making the popular grass panty-hose heads and ‘Beach Comber’ hats. This is a garden show display that says “nature is FUN!

Children – and parents – love the fun, hands-on activities to do at the PlayGarden. Even better – it’s FREE!

Children of all ages — and especially their parents — will love the creative ways to engage and learn about the flora and fauna of island life, as designed by local landscape designer Wendy Welch and Seattle Children’s PlayGarden executive director, Liz Bullard. The area will be staffed by the teachers and volunteers of the Seattle Children’s PlayGarden.

There will be three tree huts to explore, a veggie garden to plant and harvest, a large beach to play on with hidden treasures to find, a croquette court in a bamboo grove, a camp kitchen, a life-size turtle and a whisky barrel raft.

The PlayGarden’s bunnies and chickens are available for gentle petting by children of all ages.

Of course the Swiss Family ‘Ambassadors’ will also be there — the bunnies and chickens that were so popular with all the kids last year.

Plus there will also be exciting live musical performances on the Sprout Stage every show day, featuring Caspar Babypants, Recess Monkey, Nancy Stewart and Your Imaginary Friend.

The PlayGarden has musical entertainment every show day, which gets the kids hopping! Here Nancy Stewart sings a lively song.

And grab a Treasure Hunt sheet to explore the show gardens, where we have hidden a coconut in every display garden – that’s 23 coconuts to find, and it’s not easy! Parents love this, as kids are engaged finding the coconuts, while adults can “Ooh and Ahh” over the incredible gardens. The Treasure Hunt is sponsored by Molbak’s Garden + Home.

Best of all – it’s all FREE! The PlayGarden, like all our show features, is free with admission. Children 12 and under are FREE and Youth tickets (age 13 – 17) are only $5. Early Bird tickets are $16 and are now on sale on our website. That’s a lot of family entertainment for a low price.

Stroller parking is available just outside the PlayGarden, and a Café with kid-friendly fare is right next door with plenty of picnic tables for the family. ~ Janet
