Ask Flora: Planning for Garden Visits and Bulbs

Dear Flora,

We are planning to travel for the next couple of months in an RV and I told my hubby that I will go on no more road-trips unless we visit some gardens in the process. I just miss mine too much when we are gone. Do you know of a resource for planning garden trips?

~Road but not Garden Weary

Dear Road,

I do. You need to check out GardenVisit. It’s a great resource and you can specifically check the areas where you will be. Users download pictures when they visit gardens (so take lots and share with us!) and also write reviews of the gardens. So it can save you a lot of time and resources by seeing what your peers recommend. I sent in a review today for the Hoyt Arboretum, one I highly recommend if you are near Portland, Oregon, even in the winter months.

By the way, you should check out the book “Queen of the Road: The True Tale of Seven States, 22,000 miles, 200 Shoes, 2 Cats, 1 Poodle, a Husband and a Bus with a Will of Its Own” by Doreen Orion. It’s a hilarious book about a year-long RV trip that Doreen didn’t want to take either.

Dear Flora,

I need to plant! Can I plant bulbs now?

~Dirt Withdrawal

Dear Dirt Withdrawal,

Yes, it is the perfect time to plant bulbs for spring. Choose for color and type according to what you like. Use package directions to plant and cover them up. It’s really very easy and you will be rewarded with gorgeous flowers in a few months.

~Flora
