A Roman Holiday Beckons

A Roman Holiday Beckons

Beloved Hepburn movie inspires garden setting

Audrey Hepburn played a crown princess on a hectic European tour in the 1952 classic, “Roman Holiday.” Stressed from a whirlwind schedule, she embarks on a holiday in Rome away from her handlers and the press. Campy excitement ensues in the form of Gregory Peck.

The designers for the APLD garden (Association of Professional Landscape Designers) know that even non-royals need a way to escape from our busy schedules and find some way to relax. What better way to do that then in a lush garden, designed for family activities and graceful outdoor living – a setting fit for a crown princess, or any typical Northwest family.

Seattle area designers Susie Thompson (Susie Landscape Designs), Leanne Goulding (Terra Design Studio) and Shelley Retchless (Huckleberry Gardens) are teaming up this year for the 2013 APLD garden, titled “Audrey’s Roman Holiday.” It will have a Mediterranean flair, with a lion’s head fountain as a focal point. A Vespa will be parked nearby, similar to the one used by Hepburn in the movie.

A team of APLD designers created this stunning garden for the 2010 garden show.

This will be a garden perfect for family. It will have space for an outdoor living area, and an entertainment viewing area nestled among the plants. Designed to be both functional and beautiful, the design elements could be sized up or down to fit any size property for the small home or large. The lush plantings are being provided courtesy of Monrovia.

The designers choose metal to be a recurring theme, so look for a custom metal gate with a Mediterranean motif, created by Jim Honold, of Home & Garden Art in Seattle, along with a metal wall hanging.

The walkways and patio hardscapes will add a very special touch. The French limestone pavers are both authentic and beautiful, and suitable for any Northwest garden, as well as a garden nestled into a Mediterranean hillside. Do try this at home.

One of two seating areas in the 2012 APLD garden that were used for complimentary garden design consults at the show.

The APLD garden is just one of 23 fully-built show gardens, laden with tall trees, blooming shrubs, gently flowing streams, dazzling color and inspiration wherever you look. Like Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday,” attendees relish escaping from the dreary winter and experiencing a mini-holiday inside the Washington State Convention Center. You can too, February 20 – 24, 2013. But don’t wait, because it’s back to reality on February 25th. ~ Janet
